Sweet Chili + Garlic Fried Tofu

Hiiiii friends! Hope you’re doing well :)

I’ve been making different types of fried tofu and I think this is my favorite one so far! A bunch of you over on Instagram also wanted the recipe, so here it is.

I include instructions for those who want to use an air fryer and also for those who want to pan fry! But pro tip: using an air fryer is a game changer ~ way less work and time at the stove.

Keep scrolling for the recipe and instructions! Hope you enjoy it xx

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 60 minutes (with passive time to multitask!)

Servings: 5

INGREDIENTS:

+ 2 12oz Package Extra Firm Tofu (cubed)

+ 1/2 cup Tapioca Flour

+ 1/4 cup Garlic Powder

+ 1 teaspoon Sesame Oil

Sweet Chili + Garlic Sauce Ingredients:

+ 4 Tablespoons Shoyu (soy sauce/liquid aminos)

+ 1 1/2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar

+ 3 Tablespoons Sweet Chili sauce (we love Mae Ploy)

+ 1 Tablespoon Honey

+ 4 Cloves Fresh Garlic (minced)

+ Green Onions

PAN FRYING INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Drain and slice tofu in half horizontally. Stack slices of tofu on each other with a paper towel between layers to remove as much water as possible. Let sit for 5-15 minutes ~ whatever you have time for. You may need to change out paper towel.

  2. Cut tofu in one inch cubes and toss in large bowl with tapioca flour and garlic powder.

  3. Put sesame oil in large frying pan on medium heat

  4. Place tofu cubes in pan, leave space between each cube. Try not to move them, this will allow it to get crispy.

  5. Every 3-4 minutes, turn tofu so each side is fried and crispy.

  6. While tofu is frying, make the Sweet Chili + Garlic sauce by combining all ingredients together.

  7. After all the tofu is fried and crispy, combine all tofu with Sweet Chili + Garlic sauce keeping the heat on medium. Mix and let sauce heat up for 2-3 minutes. This will allow the sauce to thicken.

  8. Serve immediately and garnish with green onions. I usually always serve this dish with hot rice and a veggie!

  9. If there are any left overs, store it in an airtight container for up to five days in the refrigerator.

AIR FRYING INSTRUCTIONS:

  3. Preheat air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

  4. Place tofu in the air fryer while leaving space between each tofu cube. Air fry for 20 minutes while stopping half way to shake to ensure even frying. You may need to fry tofu in batches if they don’t all fit. I did two batches.

  5. While tofu is frying, make the Sweet Chili + Garlic sauce by combining all ingredients.

  6. Once all tofu is fried to your desired crispy-ness, transfer to large frying pan. On medium heat, combine all tofu with Sweet Chili + Garlic sauce. Mix and let sauce heat up for 2-3 minutes. This will allow the sauce to thicken.

  7. Serve immediately and garnish with green onions. I usually always serve this dish with hot rice and a veggie!

  8. If there are any left overs, store it in an airtight container for up to five days I the refrigerator.
